In 1975 the Oakland Historical Society converted a former dry goods and grocery store, built in 1905, into the Nishna Heritage Museum, which highlighs the history of the local community.

Visitors can experience several aspects of southwest Iowa’s history, from prehistorical fossils to late 19th century artifacts. Exhibits include: 1900s era kitchen, church, barbershop and blacksmith shop; early farm machinery and tools; late 19th century clothing and toys,a 1902-dated telephone switchboard; and much more.
